June 9th Emergency Communication Class

What is Amateur Radio

Ham Radio, also known as Amateur Radio, is a worldwide communication service that allows licensed operators to communicate using radio frequencies without relying on the internet, cell towers, or traditional phone systems.

Ham Radio is used for emergency communications, disaster response, public service events, technical experimentation, and connecting with people locally and around the world. Operators can communicate by voice, digital messaging, satellites, and even low-power field setups designed for off-grid operation.

In emergencies, Ham Radio often becomes one of the most reliable forms of communication when normal systems fail. It combines technology, preparedness, community service, and real-world communication skills into one powerful capability.

Learn how to properly operate handheld, mobile, and base station radios using real-world communication procedures. Students will gain confidence communicating on repeaters, simplex, emergency nets, and field operations.

Discover how radio communications are used during emergencies, disasters, and system failures. Learn emergency protocols, deployment readiness, message handling, situational awareness, and communication planning when normal infrastructure goes down.

Understand how radios, antennas, power systems, and communication gear work together. Students will learn how to build effective field-ready communication setups for home, vehicle, portable, and off-grid operations.

Prepare for your Ham Radio license while exploring the many practical uses of amateur radio including community service, emergency response, worldwide communication, digital modes, preparedness networking, and tactical field communications.
